synchronicity
The knowledge of what’s going to happen before it happens, the knowing, the understanding the elements, the ability to utilize speed, time, frame, motion, blur, light, all in a perfect blend, a perfect merging, using one or sometimes thousands of clicks, millions of pixels, bringing everything at just the right nanosecond to make a perfect package: that’s what great photographers do.
That’s what junior Matt Garnett did at the JEA/NSPA national convention on Nov. 15, 2013 with his sports photography package entries where he received the highest rating a student contestant can receive: ‘Superior’.
The judges noted that it looked like he had “shot a lot of sports,” and of course they would be correct. Garnett has been shooting photos for The Talon since his freshman year, which now houses over 50,000 photos, most of which belong to him.
As head photographer and a two year Editor-in-Chief of The Talon, Garnett has shot over 300 high school sporting events, and many other college sporting events since his freshman year in 2011.
The extra hours and practice paid off and the judges liked his work.
“Any of these photos could easily run in any newspaper in this country – and editors would be proud to have them,” one judge said.
Those of us at The Talon who have worked with Garnett know that he demands perfection in everything he does, and can’t wait for what one judge tells him to do, “take it to the next level.”
