Baseball Team Heads to Playoffs

With the regular season in the books, the baseball team is heading to the playoffs for the seventh consecutive year, following a perfect 8-0 record in district play, marking them as this season’s district champion. Though the season began slowly, the boys finished strong, riding a 10-game win streak into the playoffs.

The team will begin its playoff run this Thursday against the Bridgeport Bulls at Northwest High School. The first round match up, a 3 game series, will feature senior pitcher Parker Mushinski on the mound in game 1, with senior Drew Gooch expected to start game 2 on Friday. The Eagles appear to be the heavy favorite, as they enter the game with a 22-7-1 overall record, compared to the Bulls’ 8-19-0 record. In their only other match up this season, the Eagles beat the Bulls 6-5 on March 8.

“Playing with Tanner has been unbelievable this year,” senior and second baseman Brandon Boyzuick said, referring to his younger brother, sophomore Tanner Boyzuick. “Being able to play beside my brother in football and baseball is amazing. We were already close to each other but this past year has made us closer. I wish I got to do this for the rest of my life.”

Both brothers are middle infielders on the team this year. Brandon also spoke about the various challenges and obstacles of making a strong run in the postseason.

“Our biggest challenge is definitely taking it one game at a time,” he said. “We can’t be thinking about games that are weeks away. We just need to stay focused on what we need to do on that day.”

With strong senior leadership on the pitching staff, the Eagles have a solid core of experienced starting pitchers to rally around.

“I have all the confidence in the world in our pitchers going into any three game series,” Boyzuick said. “We have great starting pitchers to put in all three games. They have been great for us all season and they will continue to be lights out.”

The baseball team expects to see a great turn out of fans at Northwest High School on Thursday night as they take on the Bridgeport Bulls in game 1.
