As the Lady Eagles go out with a bang (a 35-1 record for the 2015-2016 season), their goal of earning a “back to back” state championship has been conclusively accomplished.

“Basketball season was so fun this year,” Sophomore forward Gabby Standifer said. “It was my first year here but we’re all so close. I wasn’t really used to that, I was used to just going to practice with a team where I came from, but here we all have so much fun together, it was just such a fun season.”

Many of the Lady Eagles have known each other since the fourth, fifth, and sixth grade, which has created great chemistry between the girls on and off the court.

“We have sleepovers at each other’s houses and do fun things together like bowling and going out to eat.” Standifer said.

The Lady Eagles attended several tournaments this season including a few such as the Jack Frost tournament in Georgetown, the regional tournament held in Commerce, Texas, and the state tournament in San Antonio.

“Going to tournaments was basically one big sleep over and you get to play basketball at the same time.” Junior guard Kayla Haynes said. “We take care of our business, but we have a lot of fun doing it.”

The Lady Eagles held a team dinner every Thursday night at a different players house to bond before a game.

“We did a lot of little fun things like secret santa’s and team dinners.” Sophomore Mira Lillard said.

The group of girls’ work has paid off and they’re enjoying their time off before going back into the gym again.

“It’s the little things like not having to rush to get ready in five minutes before practice, we can take our time and everything’s just a little more laid back.” Lillard said. “We had team work every day and I think this is the most hard working team in the state and I’m glad to be a part of it.”

“Everything is just all good now because we’re state champions.” Lillard said with a cheek to cheek grin.
