Ellie Goulding Shifts Direction With ‘Delirium’

Ellie Goulding Shifts Direction With Delirium

Chad Lyle, Reporter

Ellie Goulding’s third studio album has been a long time in the making. Her sound has come a long way from the indie-pop atmosphere she adopted with her first release, veering in a more radio-friendly, although not necessarily unoriginal, direction. Almost any song on this latest effort, Delirium, could be a hit.

Lead single “On My Mind”, encompasses some of the best aspects of Delirium. Produced by Swedish super-producer Max Martin (who has collaborated with the likes of Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Britney Spears, Kesha, Ariana Grande, The Backstreet Boys, and NSYNC), the single shoots straight for the heart of formulaic pop music, while still maintaining a uniquely Ellie Goulding vibe and presentation.

While the record is undoubtedly a pop album (more so than her previous releases), it is not afraid to showcase Goulding’s unique voice and test the limits of contemporary music. “Holding On For Life” is a steady pop anthem that displays the raw power of her voice, while “Codes” is a more pop and more lighthearted tune. What both have in common, however, is that both are equally catchy, with choruses that will take hold of the listener’s mind with an unrelenting grip.

Delirium may be a sonic departure from Goulding’s earlier work, but it encompasses all of the unique qualities that have made her a notable standout from the contemporary pop field thus far. There is no doubt that it will please long time fans while further expanding her domination of the pop airwaves.
