Scream Queens Review

For fans of American Horror Story, Ryan Murphy’s latest television endeavor, Scream Queens, is familiar territory. Murphy – the mastermind behind Glee, Nip/Tuck, American Horror Story, and soon to be American Crime Story – is the creator of the Fox horror/comedy. The show follows the residents of the Kappa Kappa Tau sorority at Wallace University as a series of killings are committed around campus and within the sorority house.

Queens is composed of an ensemble cast that includes familiar names such as Emma Roberts, Jamie Lee Curtis, Abigail Breslin, Lea Michele, Nasim Pedrad, and Keke Palmer. Celebrity recurring appearances thus far have included Ariana Grande and Nick Jonas. The casting was very well done: each of these veterans are surprisingly good in their roles, adding unique depth to the characters while making the show very fun to watch.

Outside of the outstanding cast, Scream Queens packs a fast-paced plot that balances horror and comedy– a feat that very few shows could pull off. Throughout the lengthy two-hour premier episode, there were relatively no moments where the viewer is tempted to take their eyes off the screen.

Although the comedy of Scream Queens will not be for everyone, and nothing is off limits: the show thrives on cringe-worthy moments. In both its comedy and horror, Queens pushes the boundaries of what’s acceptable on network television.

The sorority plotline draws similarities to the third season of American Horror Story, which followed a group of young witches living together in a house in New Orleans. Those familiar with Murphy’s style will likely enjoy Scream Queens, while newcomers might need to give the show a couple of episodes before deciding whether or not it suits their tastes.
