Argyle traveled out west to face Abilene Wiley in an intense first game of the season on Friday, Aug. 28 at Wylie Stadium.

The game took off with Argyle receiving the opening kick but was quickly forced to punt the ball. Wylie followed with a shaky start on their first possession, and Argyle’s defense was relentless, sacking Wiley’s quarterback for a 15 yard loss at the beginning of the first quarter.

At the end of the first quarter, the game was tied 0-0, and Wylie started with the ball. They held them to only a field goal thanks to Argyle’s strong red zone defense.

Taylor Sweatt (7) stormed the red zone and made a cut between the guards for a touchdown late in the second, putting Argyle up by four. The Bulldogs quickly turned around and gained ground with a run in for a touchdown, making the score 10-7 at half.

Wylie started with the ball in the third, but Dylan Sadler (4) came up with a key interception that would put Argyle on the 40, turning the momentum of the game.

“After half time the team got their heads straight and played the way they should have played the whole game,” Sadler said.

Argyle successfully kicked a field goal thanks to Dane Ledford (2) coming out of the pocket and making a 20 yard gain, which brought the game to a tie at 10-10 at the end of the third quarter. Wylie again was unable to stop the Eagles offense as they put up another 3.

With 3:45 left in the fourth quarter the ball was handed off to Drew Estrada (3) who carried it in for a touchdown. This ended all hopes of a comeback for the weary Bulldogs.

The Eagles took their first game of the season 20-10. After the game when asked about the offensive lines strengths, coach Steve Chancellor said that the pass protection in the second half of the game was very good.

Overall, it was a great start to the season for the Argyle Eagles who will hopefully play this well all season.
