Eagles Defeat Denison on Last Second Hail Mary

In a non-district game vs Denison, Argyle has returned to AT&T Stadium, the site of their 2013 state championship game win, to face off against Denison in the Southwest Showcase.

In the first half, Denison elected to receive the kickoff. Denison quickly gained yardage with quarterback runs and short passes to the flat, allowing their shiftier ball carriers to outmaneuver the Argyle defenders for some key yardage. Argyle suffered 2 injuries on the drive. The drive was kept alive on two key plays, a pass interference call on Erik Ramon on a 3rd down and 11 and a 6 yard QB run by Wilson on 4th and 1. On the next play Wilson ran the ball again the remaining 11yards for a touchdown. Denison also chewed up half the first quarter game clock as they took the 7-0 lead.

Argyle returned the kickoff for a good gain by Dane Ledford, but the offense was unable to get more then a single yard, punting to Denison shortly with 5 minutes left in the 1st quarter. When Denison got the ball back, they were initially stifled before on 3rd and 11 they threw a short pass to #11 for a large gain. Luckily for Argyle, it was called back to only a minor gain after a holding call against Denison. When they were only 19 yards away from scoring, Taylor Sweatt recovered a fumble and and returned it almost all the way back for a touchdown. On 1st and 6, Argyle ran the ball for no gain, but on second down Gage McCook took the ball for the 6 yard touchdown to tie the game 7-7 with a little over two minutes left in the game.

Denison returned the ball to the 23 yard line, and immediately continued their retinue of running and throwing short passes to move against the Argyle defense. Denison elected to punt the ball to Argyle at the Argyle 26 yard. After a first down, Argyle had a 3rd down and 11 at their own 35 yard line and a long pass fell incomplete deep to Drew Estrada.

Denison fumbled the ensuing punt at their own 23 but recovered it to preserve the drive. On a 3rd and 6, Denison completed a deep pass and run to #6 Wagner for a good 40 yard gain to the Argyle 35. Later, on 4th and 12, a deep pass to #9 by Denison fell incomplete, overthrown.

Argyle took the ball at the 37 yard line. Argyle had it’s most consistent drive of the game up to that point, as they milked the clock and steadily ran the ball down the field behind the legs of Nick Ralston and Gage McCook. After a long drive, the Eagle reached 1st and goal at the 7 yard line after a pass to Dane Ledford. After a 2 yard run by McCook, McCook took the ball again for a 5 yard QB run and a touchdown to take an Argyle lead 14-7.

On their next drive, Denison threw a deep post for a touchdown to tie the game 14-14. Argyle tried to mount one final drive, but the team ran out of time. At the end of the half, Argyle is tied with Denison 14-14, and will receive the 2nd half kickoff.
