Lady Eagles Taking it to State Finals

The Lady Eagle’s played the Wharton Tigers in the state semi-final game at the Alamo Dome at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.

The game started at a fast pace as the Lady Eagles kept up a strong offense.  After two defensive rebounds and one layup by Madison Ralston (22)  the score was raised 4-0. Gabby Standifer (33) continued the strong offense with a three pointer.  The Tigers hustled to fight back with their first three pointer with 4:33 left in the first quarter making the score 10-3. After two rebounds and a free throw by Vivian Gray (12) the Tigers continued to fight back.

“We came out strong and we came out ready to play and followed the game plan,” Gray said.

After another few points from both offense and defense, the first quarter ended with a score of 18-6.

Sustaining energy, both teams continued to push for more points.  Crowd cheering, Gray made a defensive rebound. After a steal and the Tigers defensive foul, Brooklyn Carl (11) scored two free throws with the score 23-6. With a few missed shot attempts by the Tigers, the clock runs to 6:19 and Standifer (33) added another three points to the board.

“I was glad I got up to that good start,” Standifer said. “When that happens, I just try to let the game come to me, and just hope my team and I keep doing pretty good.”

Gray scores another two after a timeout and Tiger’s Roberta Farris (5) turns it over.  Carl made another steal and by 3:52, Gray makes two more shot attempts, updating the score to 32-6. The Tigers finally return to the points with a three and two points by Farris (5) beginning half time with the score 43-11.

Continuing to push in the third, with 7:25 Gray rebounded, bringing the score up to 44-12. With a missed three done by the Tiger’s Destiny Knight (1), Gray rebounds and goes for a layup updating the score to 46-12. At 5:42 Carl (11) added to the board with a layup, and Madison Ralston made the score 49-12. Madison Ralston made two shot attempts and brought the score up to 50-12. Gray takes a jump shot and brings the score up to 52-12. Standifer takes two more shots as the score got closer to the end and making the score 54-12. Ciarra Mutshatshi of the Wharton Tigers takes two shots and makes the score 54-14. Standifer makes a three and pushes the score to 57-14 with 3:28 left in the third. Freshman Rhyle McKinney (23) makes a three making the score 60-17 in the final minutes of the third. Aliga Young (4) makes a final jumper and ends the third with a score of 60-19.

Beginning the fourth strong with a jumper from Sophie Betzhold, a layup from Freshman Grace Freeman and another score in the final minutes of the game by Mira Lillard makes the score 69-28. McKinney pushes on with a layup as the score rises to 71-28. Wharton Tigers Farris makes two layups and forwards their score to 71-31, ending the game with another Argyle victory.

Coach Skip Townsend said what his team needs for tomorrow’s game.

“Those two teams that are playing right now are really good teams,” Coach Skip Townsend said.  “We need to get some confidence going into that game. We want to win this next game. I told them [team] if they win this next game, they’d be legendary.”
