1. Fox News To Pay $20 Million To Gretchen Carlson To Settle Sexual Harassment Lawsuit
The former co-host of Fox & Friends filed a lawsuit in July alleging that Roger Ailes, the then-Chairman of Fox News, sexually harassed her during her tenure at the network. Ailes has since resigned, and as of Tuesday, 21st Century Fox has agreed to settle the suit on his behalf for $20 million. Read about it.
2. Wells Fargo Fires 5,300 For Creating Fake Accounts
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau released a statement this week announcing that Wells Fargo employees created millions of bank and credit card accounts without the knowledge of their customers in order to reach sales targets and gain bonuses. In response to the scandal, Wells Fargo has fired 5,300 employees, about 1% of it’s staff. Read about it.
3. The Dallas Morning News Endorses First Democrat For The President Since World War II
After condemning Donald Trump for lacking conservative values in a searing Tuesday editorial, the Dallas paper recommended Hillary Clinton for the presidency on Wednesday. Citing the businessman and former reality television star as “hostile to conservatism”, the DMN announced it would be breaking from a 75 year tradition of endorsing Republican candidates for this election, opting to support the former Secretary of State. 4. Shooting At Texas High School
A 14-year-old High School student in Alpine, Texas shot and injured a fellow before taking her own life Thursday. The victim is being treated at a local hospital along with an officer who was apparently shot by friendly fire. Read about it.
5. Lochte Suspended For 10 Months
The United States Olympic Committee has suspended swimmer Ryan Lochte for 10 months following an international incident in which he lied to Brazilian authorities about being robbed at gunpoint. Additionally, Lochte won’t have access to Team U.S.A. swimming centers, will lose around $100,000 of bonus money, and will be required to put in 20 hours of community service. Read about it.
6. Female World War II Pilot Finally Laid To Rest At Arlington National Cemetery
A year and a half after her death, the remains of Elaine D. Harmon were buried at Arlington National. Harmon had been a member of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (or WASPS), a ground-breaking Army unit of female pilots who trained men to fly during World War II. She was laid to rest at Arlington Wednesday following the passing of legislation that allowed WASPS to be buried with full military honors, gaining equal recognition to their male counterparts. 7. Apple Announces New iPhone, Apple Watch
The latest iPhone and iPhone Plus models were unveiled Wednesday alongside an updated version of the Apple Watch. The new iPhones (dubbed the 7 and the 7 Plus) both feature a new 12 megapixel camera, while the 7 Plus sports a telephoto camera and a brand new depth-of-field feature. Both models are water and dust resistant, come with an updated stereo, a new processor, and improved battery life. The new Apple Watch is waterproof and ships with a built-in GPS. Read about it.
8. 2016 Presidential Debate Moderators Announced
There will be three presidential debates leading up to the election November 8th, held on September 26th, October 9th, and October 19th respectively. Additionally, there will be a VP debate October 4th. Read about it.
9. Hunt Begins For New DA Following Resignation of Susan Hawk
The Dallas County District Attorney Susan Hawk turned in her resignation Tuesday to Texas Governor Greg Abbott, leaving him to choose her successor. Read about it.
