Winter Semi-Formal or Old Homecoming? Students Voice Opinions Over the New vs. Old
January 26, 2016
The last formal homecoming dance hosted in the auxiliary gym was in the fall of 2012. This year’s seniors were the only ones who got to experience that; therefore, how does the old formal homecoming dance compare to the new Winter Semi-Formal dance?
Due to the last minute decision on throwing a semi-formal dance, the Winter Semi-Formal lacked some of the usual luxuries. Since the dance had to be thrown together in such a hasty fashion and had a decreased budget, this year’s dance differed from previous ones. It’s up in the air as to which dance was more entertaining to the students, but there were definitely elements missing that made homecoming such a treat.
The old semi-formal dance had fun, interactive amenities like Snappy Snow, the Gamer Truck, and the Photo Booth. These luxuries enhanced the dance because even if dancing wasn’t someone’s forte, there was more entertainment simply right outside the building. Also, the DJ for 2012 dance played the songs that were popular for the year, therefore people were more inclined to dance.
Although the Winter Semi-Formal did not have all the “extras” that homecoming used to have, the dance was still a fun event that allowed for everyone to come together and have a great time. Everyone agreed that the decorations from the recent dance added to the festiveness and fit the theme perfectly. Many students even mentioned that the decorations reminded them of ones that they have seen before in movies. All in all, the dance was a hit and the students are very glad that a semi-formal dance has been added back into the school year. Students loved having the opportunity to dress up and spend the evening with their friends. Students are anxious to see how the Winter Semi-Formal will evolve throughout the next couple of years.
