Staying Healthy During the Season Change

Emma Malone, Reporter

As the air gets colder, the classic symptoms occur; from dry skin to the flu, the season change affects us all. However, there are some simple steps to staying healthy during the holidays.

1.Sanitize

Wiping down areas like desks and bus seats or any other areas that have been in contact with people can prevent the spread of germs from person to person and keep you safe. Clorox wipes or other disinfecting wipes are easy to carry around in your bag and can really help you to stay feeling 100% for the holidays.

2. Stay Hydrated

Cold temperatures and dry air make us more susceptible to bacteria and viruses, so staying hydrated is essential in order to keep mucous membranes healthy. Drinking about three water bottles a day will help you to feel refreshed, awake, and healthy.

3. Wash Your Hands

Washing your hands should be an obvious hygiene habit, but making sure to wash them thoroughly can help to keep you healthy. Using soap and washing your hands well before you eat can help you to not ingest germs that will make you sick.

4. Dealing With Cold Symptoms

It’s normal to have some symptoms like a runny nose or a sore throat, but treating these quick can save you from a full blown sinus infection. Drinking warm lemon tea or other teas, especially made for sore throats, can help sooth a scratchy throat and cough. Also, using a hot compress or warm damp towel on your face can expand blood vessels which will help open up your sinus system. However, if none of these previous steps help and you have persistent symptoms, you might have a sinus infection. Yellow mucus is an obvious sign that you need to go to the doctor.

Hopefully following these steps will prevent illness, so your holidays can be stress and illness free.
