Tuesday night Argyle’s varsity volleyball team geared up for their game against Sanger. So far they had been undefeated in district and were hopeful to take a second win from Sanger. One of the teams captains, senior setter, Alexa Bass, talked about how the team prepared for the game.

“It’s just halfway through district so this is the point where we have to keep a good level of focus and drive.” Bass said. “Since we’ve won all our games in district so far its easy to get lazy and underestimate teams, but the fact is we have to use these games to get better for playoffs when we have tougher competition.”

The volleyball team has won all their district games and since their first trip to the state tournament in 2013 they have been on the hunt for the gold medal.

“We have the bronze and silver so I can’t even explain how bad we want the gold.” Senior captain Strealy Sizelove said. “At this point it’s really more about staying together and working as a team than our actual playing, every girl on this team has been playing since we were 10 so skill wise were extremely solid, really its just trusting each other and working for a common goal.”

Because of so many previous years of district championships Argyle has a serious target on their back, especially to the other district teams so it was no surprise for Sanger’s crowd to be hyped and ready to beat Argyle.

“Personally I love when our opponent has a ton of fans, the energy in the gym is that much better even if they’re not rooting for us.” Varsity libero Maddie Deguire said.

Sanger’s gym had just that. Their fans were rowdy and loud, but that didn’t stop Argyle . In the first set the Lady Eagles came out with a ton of energy and took the game 25 to 16.

“The second set was a little slower.” Middle blocker Allison White said. “I think we were comfortable about the fact that we could take them so we didn’t push harder and Sanger did.”

In the second match Sanger took 19 points off of  Argyle with their defensive strategy but the lady eagles were able to close the set and win. In the third and final set the Lady eagles were as strong as ever and only let Sanger score 12 points. Allison White and Haylee Vanpopel led in kills and Argyle set a good expectation for future opponents. The Lady Eagles will play their first warm up game next Friday against Colleyville Heritage and hope to play to their best ability and carry that energy forward into playoffs.

“We’re really eager to play our warm-up game next Friday.” Senior captain Eighmy Dobbins said. “District gave us a good time to work on our core skills and hopefully some tough competition in our warm up games will shoot us up to that next level so we can play our best in playoffs.”
