Law and Order: Special Victims Unit is a police procedural drama created by Dick Wolfe. The show is a spin-off of the tv series Law and Order. Over the years, the show has gained popularity and has repeatedly been renewed for a consecutive 17 seasons.

The show is based on detectives that work in New York City. Law and Order SVU follows the detectives around the city as they investigate sexually based offensives. Mariska Hargitay, known on the show as Olivia Benson, is the main character. Although the investigations are not real life situations, they seem like they are. At the end of the show one is able to see who the accused defendant is.

The show draws one in because it is interesting to see all of the investigations that go on in order to find the perpetrator. At times, the detectives put themselves under cover so the perpetrator will reveal to the undercover detectives what crime they had committed. On one particular episode, Olivia Benson went undercover in a jail to find who the perpetrator was.

Law and Order SVU is regularly played on the TV channel USA. USA often has marathons to support people who have been sexually victimized before and to raise awareness that sexually based offensives can happen in real life.
