New Foreign Language Teacher Comes to AHS

With our new school year has come a flood of new teachers.

For instance, new Spanish teacher, Ms. Matteo, moved to Texas from Ohio a little over a month ago.

“I came to Argyle specifically because I had heard great things about the kids, sports, academics,” Matteo said. “Argyle is awesome.”

Matteo has been teaching Spanish for 5 years, making this year her sixth.

“I became a teacher because I enjoy helping people understand something that they didn’t before,” Matteo said. “Also I love learning myself, and teaching is such a good place for that.”

Teaching offers some challenges in the classroom.

“For me the biggest obstacle is keeping the students interested and wanting to learn the language,” Matteo said. “You have to teach what’s required while still making the class fun.”

Since she has been teaching for multiple years, Matteo has found certain ways to keep kids wanting to learn.

“One-on-one teaching is certainly the most effective,” Matteo said. “But in class I like incorporating all kinds of activities like listening exercises, videos, games, and just different things to keep the class up and excited.”

As a new teacher to Argyle, she has already set goals for this school year.

“My personal goals for this year are to speak more Spanish to the lower-level classes,” Matteo said. “It’s a lot easier to speak to the upper-level students because they can easily respond, but it’s important that Spanish 1 and 2 students get comfortable with speaking and listening too.”

With only two weeks into school, Matteo already has high hopes for this year.

“I’m really excited about the students,” Matteo said. “I can tell it’s gonna be a great year.”
