Boys’ Basketball Team Finishes Season Strong
March 10, 2015
With hard work, dedication, and much practice, the Eagles wrapped up an unforgettable season. After winning a thrilling 59-58 against Wilmer-Hutchins in the area playoff, the Eagle boys faced Triple A Academy, the number 1 team in TX, on Mar. 5. After a hard fought game, the boys suffered a close loss to Triple A with a score of 56-50 in the regional quarterfinals.
Looking back on the season, the athletes see how much they have grown from the beginning of the season to the end.
“It was a long ride,” senior F Jon Davis said. “We went from getting destroyed by Timbercreek in a preseason scrimmage to only losing by 6 points to the number 1 team in the state! We started off the season rough, but once the football guys came over, our team ended the season 18-2, and by the end, we were a very tough team to beat.”
Comparing the 2013-14 season to the 2014-15 season, teammates are convinced that this season was filled with better work ethic and had an overall greater experience.
“Last year was fun, I can’t lie,” senior C Kade Barnett said. “However, this season was completely different. With Russell Perkins as head coach and Coach Salyers as assistant coach, the whole team knew we had a chance to do some special things. Plus, personally, I enjoyed this season a lot more because of the camaraderie within my teammates.”
Overlooking the entire Eagle team, the two brothers, Jon and David Davis, had more fun playing with each other on Varsity than ever before.
“Getting to play with my brother definitely made my season,” sophomore G David Davis said. “This was my first year playing with him on the Varsity level. His insight helped me in multiple games to give more effort and push through the pressure.”
Each teammate has various favorite moments throughout the hard fought season.
“I’ve had a lot of emotional moments throughout this season,” senior PG Hunter Shoemake said. “My favorite moment is most likely beating Wilmer Hutchins twice and competing with the number 1 team in the state, Triple A Academy.”
The entire experience of playing high school basketball will stay with any player for the rest of their lives. Seniors especially hold onto the moments they have experienced on and off the court.
“Basketball in general has taught me a ton,” Jon Davis said. “It’s taught me character, hard work, dedication, the importance of team chemistry, and trusting one another. Mostly it has taught me about finding out what you really want, what you desire, and pursuing that goal with all your heart.”
