Argyle’s lead band director, Kathy Johnson, was informed that she will be inducted into the Texas Bandmasters Association on Wednesday, Mar. 6. The Texas Bandmasters Association was established in the early 1900s by John Philip Sousa. Potential members are vetted and watched over a period of time then nominated for membership. It is a great honor to become a member of the association, and the Argyle community is very proud of Johnson’s achievement.

“This honor is similar to a lifetime achievement, and it focuses on work that I have done throughout my career,” Johnson said. “I believe this has a very positive reflection on the band program and the district. And, maybe it will give me a little more street cred!”

All students that have worked with Johnson would agree that she is very deserving of this award. Senior Meghan Starteri explains the effect that Johnson has had on her.

“If it weren’t for her [Johnson], I wouldn’t be the person I am today,”Starteri said. “She has helped me to grow as a musician and as a person. Before I became a part of this program, I wasn’t confident or comfortable with myself or my musicianship and she helped me gain confidence.

Senior Aric Kline admires Johnson’s persistence as a mentor.

“She’s always wanted me to be better,” Kline said. “She just taught me that there’s always room for improvement.”

Michael Lemish, associate director, commends Johnson’s work as an instructor.

“She certainly deserves this award,” Lemish said. “At every school she’s taught in, she’s been able to reach the students and get them to achieve their goals at the highest level possible.”

Johnson’s ability to impact her students has shown in her career achievements. Senior Nathan Little explains the most important lessons he’s learned from her.

“Mrs. Johnson has shown me that I’m not always the most important thing going when I play,” Little said. “She’s taught me to be humble and thankful for those who have gotten me to where I am today.

Johnson will be officially inducted in Mar. 2016 in San Luis Obispo, California.
