The varsity Eagles boys’ basketball team came out of Sanger with their first district victory, winning 47-37, while the girls varsity team also won their match.

The Eagles were outplayed for most of the first half and were down 24-16. That was before Argyle’s 7 point run kept the game close at 24-23 as the first half ended.

“We definitely needed that momentum heading into the second half,” senior Joseph Clayton. “It was a struggle in the first half. We just couldn’t shoot well so those 7 points really helped us out.”

In their first district game of the season, the Eagles knew ‘it would be a tough match-up’.

“We knew it was going to be tough coming into Sanger,” senior Hunter Shoemake said. “They just started off really hot, and we weathered the storm, played our game, and it paid off.”

Shoemake played a large part in the Eagle’s victory, scoring 12 of the team’s 47 points.

“I shot the ball pretty well, but we won, and that’s all that matters,” Shoemake said. “We’re 1-0 in district.”

One of the largest challenges the Eagles faced was the opposing crowd. A student section lead by several highly painted individuals led chants at crucial game moments.

“I really liked their crowd; they were funny,” Clayton said. “I wish our crowd would do that. It brings a little more energy and adrenaline into the game.”

While the team will celebrate this win, they also know it is only the first step in their season-long journey.

“This definitely sets the tone,” Clayton said. “It feels really good winning, especially going against a pretty good team. This will carry over into other district games.”
