Argyle opened up their playoff season with a 70-7 beat down of the Lake Worth Bullfrogs after an undefeated regular season. Argyle started the game with a 49-0 first half based around runs by RB Gage McCook and perfect passes from QB Cooper Rodgers.

Even though it was a playoff game, Argyle came out and made it obvious from the start that they were the superior team. They have now outscored opponents 200-0 in the first half over the past five games.

“We’re clicking on all cylinders right now,” Rodgers said. “Our offense is flawless right now and on defense we’re getting people stopped. We’re a force to be reckoned with.”

One reason the team is able to run up the score board is owed to the many weapons they have.

“We’ve been able to get the ball to a lot of different people instead of just one,” TE J.C. Chalk said. “That’s hard for other teams to beat because if they stop one person you can’t stop the four other people so it’s kind of pick your poison. It ‘s hard to stop us, and our defense is playing lights out too, not giving up any points in the first half so it’s been good overall.”

That same defense shut out Lake Worth until the game was well out of reach, lead by senior leaders like Taylor Sweat and David Bearden who were some of the highlights of the regular season.

“I like how they’ve been running around knocking people around,” Chalk said. “We’re figuring out our check downs and how to read things better, so it’s been more about understanding the defense than anything. They’re just improving each week and did amazing today.

The lead allowed some of the sophomore and junior players to earn valuable playoff time, and that experience should help out this year and in future years.

“This game felt great,” DE Matt Rowe said. “We had a new group of younger kids come in, they just make our team bigger, lift us up, and make us a lot better team.”

Cooper Rodgers was arguably the teams most valuable player, throwing six touchdowns, over 200 yards, and no incompletions.

“It was a fun game,” Rodgers said. “I just played as well as I could, executed the plays that were called, and that’s what I’m supposed to do.”

Rodger’s teammates have noticed his performance recently and will continue to rely on him to lead this team along with their potent running game.

“I was really excited for him tonight,” Chalk said. “You could tell he was really reading the defense well. He knew exactly what the safety was going to do. He watched film pretty hard this week so he knew exactly what the reads were. He’s just improving each week from Wylie to now. He’s made tremendous strides and he keeps getting better each week. It’s going to be exciting to see what he can do the rest of the season.”

An overlooked part of the team’s success may be the coaching staff. Coach Rodgers and his staff have done an amazing job putting this program together and the players understand that.

“We have a great coaching staff,” Rowe said. “We made a few little mistakes here and there but they help us out a lot by telling us things like ‘Do this differently’ or ‘Finish strong’. They give us that motivation to close it out.”

The Eagles have now advanced to the next round in the playoffs, so they know they cannot rest on their laurels long if they want to return to the state championship game.

“We just have to keep taking it one game at a time,” Rodgers said. “That’s our mentality. You can’t play all six without the next one so that’s what we’re doing. We’re going to focus on this next team and try to win that game.”
