MVP ANNOUNCED: Cooper Rodgers won the contest with 19 votes. Rodgers was 11/12 on passing Thursday night. He threw 4 touchdowns and accumulated 248 yards.

In a shoot-out game in which the two teams combined for 114 points, the Argyle Eagles came out of Carrolton with a 72-42 victory over the Ranchview Wolves. The Eagles scored consistently throughout the game, while the defense stepped up in the second half to secure the 30-point win.

Argyle scored on all six of their first half possessions, including three touchdown passes by their senior QB Cooper Rodgers.

“He’s been great,” WR Drew Estrada said. “The first game was a little shaky, but I have so much faith in Cooper. He’s grown as a quarterback and he’s playing great now.”

Rodgers connected with Estrada twice during the game, down the middle of the defense, and scored his first touchdown pass to Blake DeWoody for 57 yards early in the first quarter on another post route.

“Most of the time they roll two safeties to one, so we knew we could get them on that,” Rodgers said. “The post over the top was wide open against them all game.”

Despite the offense’s early efficiency, the game was close at the end of the first half with a score of 42-28 due to a seemingly unstoppable read-option attack lead by Ranchview’s QB Keidrien Wedley, RB Davian Carter, and WR Raghib Ismail.

““Well the most important part of it was at the beginning of the game,” safety Taylor Sweatt said.”Me, the whole defense, we weren’t getting the job done but the offense kept us in there. But we came out in the second half, made adjustments, and took it over while our offense did what they’d been doing the whole game.”

Kedrien Wedley especially gave the defense trouble early on, scoring twice in the first quarter while Carter scored three times on runs of 85, 9, and 48 yards.

“We had to play more patient,” Sweatt said. “We were coming out there jittery, coming out too fast, and we were just overrunning the ball.”

Thanks to the ever-consistent coaching staff at Argyle, the defense once again was able to step up in the second half, only allowing 14 points through the last two quarters while the Eagles scored 28.

“We’re just a second half team,” Estrada said. “Our offense is really good, so that helps, and I’m excited for the season.”

Helping the defense was Nick Ralston, who opened up the game with an 87 yard run and finished the game with four total touchdowns.

“It’s really special to have Nick,” Rodgers said. “It helps our offense go to the next level, takes our team to the next level, and it’s going to help us down the road a lot.”

The Eagles have now started the season with a 6-0 record, but very few of them have come easy. Most of the games have required the defense to make clutch stops in the end and for the offense to play consistent football, which they have managed up to this point with improving efficiency.

“I mean, the win is good and all,” Sweatt said. “I just wish we could come out and do what we do in the second half during the first half.”
