Cross Country’s Messy Mud Race
September 9, 2014
The mud pit was only part of the obstacle-filled Cross Country course, which was held in Denton at Camp Copass on Thursday. Argyle runners completed the race in nice timing compared to the their competitors. Many team mates cheered junior Anna-Marie Woolums on into placing 8th in the varsity girls race. The course offered many challenges to the runners, including a greater distance than usual.
“We ran a 5k today, which is 1.2 miles longer than we are used to,” senior captain Kenna Roberts said. “The official meets, like area and district, are only 2 miles long. So it was great training and we were pushed harder.”
Several objects were scattered along the course to increase the difficulty of the race, and to add diversity to the meet. Captain Maddy Haynes enjoyed the race with its various obstacles along the course.
“It was great!” Haynes said. “There were many hay bales, logs, and of course the mud pit which was awesome.”
The mud pit was easily the predominant obstacle on the course. While some runners took the race seriously, others had quite a bit of fun when it came to the muddy ditch.
“Some people were cannon balling into the mud pit while others were belly flopping,” Haynes explained. “There were also the serious people who were strutting through the mud pit like it was nothing.”
Though the race was filled with distracting obstacles, it stood as an indicator of how the Cross Country teams will do in future races compared to other competition.
“Krum and Celina, both in our district, were competitors for us today,” Haynes said. “I think we did very well against them so it really gave us a good view of our team.”
The Cross Country team will get another chance to evaluate their team at the meet coming up on Friday, Sep. 12. The meet is being held at White Settlement and the course is back to the regular running distance.
