The past week the Argyle debate team traveled to Austin to compete at the UIL Congressional Debate state meet. For the 3rd year in a row, Caleb Leonard advanced to the final round of debate and had the honor of debating in the State Capitol Building!
After 8 hours of debating yesterday, Caleb ended up placing 13 in the state! To put that number into perspective, about 700 students competed at the region level in conference 5A and only 51 students qualified for the state meet. To be a state finalist 3 years in a row is a very difficult and amazing accomplishment.
The rest of the Argyle congress team also put in countless hours of prep work to help Caleb get to state finals. Congress required students to research and prepare speeches on 20 different bills and resolutions. Each bill or resolution has its own unique topic and policy that it is trying to create. Students only get about a month to prepare and two weeks of that is Christmas break, so it is always a very tight turnaround to get all of the prep finished. The whole team came together and spent countless hours researching and writing speeches to help Caleb to succeed. They wrote over 150 pages of speeches for this state meet. Congratulations to Grant Parris, Addison High, Jack Dillon, Liyah Cha, and Caleb Leonard!
