This past Tuesday, Jan. 21, junior Nathan Little played trumpet in the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra, a symphony comprised of students in high school conducted by Dr. Nicholas Williams, and later performed with the Dallas Wind Symphony. The concert took place at the Meyerson Symphony Center, a performance hall in the heart of Dallas. The concert started with a brass and percussion fanfare in the foyer of the performance hall and proceeded in the grand hall with a piece called Frenzy by Andrew Boysen Jr. The piece features many intense, thrilling brass parts and cinematic themes that really encompass it’s name. The piece was proceeded by Mothership by Mason Bates. This pieces is especially intriguing because unlike most pieces where the conductor is in charge of the tempo the band performs at, a computer hooked up to speakers created futuristic-like sounds that the conductor followed. These sounds added to the overall vibe of the piece which seemed like it came right out of a Sci-Fi movie. Little performed in all three of these tunes as well as the last two songs performed the GDYO and the DWS which included Argyle Band director Kathy Johnson on flute and alto flute. Niagra Falls featured many beautiful woodwind solos and a melody that would get stuck in anyones head. Director Jerry Junkin ended the concert with King Cotton by world-renowned composer, John Philip Sousa; an energetic march with themes reminiscent of the early 1920’s. The DWS will be performing Love Songs-American Style on Tuesday, Feb 4 at 8 PM.
