Argyle Band is known for their hard work and dedication. From the early mornings to late nights, members play, march, and repeat until the show becomes muscle memory. Joining band is unlike other extracurricular activities. Grades have a huge impact — if you don’t pass, you don’t march. How is this different you might ask? In any other sport, if you don’t pass, you don’t play and the coach pulls the next best off the bench to replace you. In band, if you don’t pass, you don’t play either; however, when you don’t march there is no one to pull off the bench. Instead, your absence creates a hole in the movements which not only looks bad; it makes it harder for the marchers around you to march. Band is like a team sport in that if members don’t come to practice or pass classes, you let the team down – all 150 of them. Imagine that! Sounds a little intense, doesn’t it? Being a part of the band takes accountability to a whole new level.
What are the benefits? Band puts you in an environment with great people that share the same common interests. Band teaches you that nothing comes easy and that hard work pays off. Outside the band hall, a banner reads, “Entrance through these hallowed halls is gained through dedication, hard work, and perseverance… membership has its privileges.” This is true; however, what it doesn’t say is that those who endured, those that survived, leave prepared to compete and achieve among the best.
So come out and support your Argyle Band during their marching competitions: Plano Drumline Contest September 28th, GT Classic Marching Contest October 5th in Denton, Little Elm Marching Contest October 12th; and finally the UIL Region Marching Contest on October 23rd.
