Since 7:38 a.m. this morning when the newly-begun Indoor Athletic Complex at Argyle High School dissembled and fell to the ground, the school has been buzzing. Rumors swirled around about what had happened, who’s fault it was, and what the school was going to do. Lost in some of the commotion, and something that should certainly not be ignored, has been the worker who died in the incident, and the three others who were injured and are currently in the hospital.

The school has taken a great approach all along. The primary focus from the start was to clear the area, find out who was injured, and help those who were. In the aftermath of the tragic death of one construction worker (who’s name has not been released), we as a school shared a moment of silence and are offering up support and prayers for him and his family. This is what is important in the grand scheme of things, and should be the focus of the student base right now.

Complaints about coming to school with all of this going on are insensitive in themselves. One suggestion was for school to be dismissed this morning; however, the last thing emergency response teams needed this morning was for 700 students to be clogging up the roads as they tried to return home. Worries about what went wrong, who is to blame, and what the school is going to do next are insignificant when compared to the tragedy that occurred to the injured workers and their loved ones. Even logistical concerns about what the school will do next with the $3.7 million dollar grant that was being used to build the complex are inconsequential at this point in time. All that matters is that there were lives lost today, and our hearts should be with them.

So take a time out from your day today. Shift your thoughts and prayers to the ones in pain right now and the anguish affecting their families. Counselors are available to students and will also be coordinating for any who wish to donate cards, money, or well wishes to the families. But more than anything, keep in mind what is really important while the school endures this ordeal, and keep your thoughts and words in line as you do.
