A strong 32-team field will compete for the boys and girls championships in the 38th annual Jack Frost Basketball Tournament at three sites in Georgetown on December 1-3.
The 16-team girls field could be the strongest in the history of the event with eight teams currently listed in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches state-rankings, including defending state 4A champion Argyle. The Eagles also are currently ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 4A.
Other ranked teams are defending champion Cibolo Steele, fourth in 6A; San Antonio Wagner, fifth in 6A; Bowie, 16th in 6A; Georgetown, 10th in 5A; Fort Worth Trimble Tech, 22nd in 5A; Liberty Hill, fifth in 4A; and San Antonio Incarnate Word, third among large private schools.
The field will be complete with teams from Austin Vandegrift, Belton, Georgetown East View, Houston Westbury Christian, Hurst Bell, Leander, Lubbock Coronado and Tyler John Tyler.
Steele bested John Tyler, 50-42, in last season’s girls title game.
Round Rock McNeil is the only boys team currently ranked by the TABC — fifth in 6A.
The 16 teams completing the boys field are Austin Lake Travis, Austin Vandegrift, College Station A&M Consolidated, Belton, Georgetown, Georgetown East View, Houston Christian Homeschool Ministries, Houston Westfield, Leander, Magnolia, Round Rock Cedar Ridge, Round Rock Westwood, San Antonio Churchill, San Antonio Stevens and Trophy Club Byron Nelson.
Churchill returns as defending boys champion, having beaten Byron Nelson, 55-51, in last year’s finals.
The girls individual talent pool will include 6-foot UConn signee Alexis Gordon of Hurst Bell, 6-1 Vivian Gray of Argyle, 6-4 Emer Nichols of Houston Westbury, 6-7 Sedona Prince of Liberty Hill, 6-2 Antonia Anderson of Cibolo Steele, 6-2 Jhyra Conn of Trimble Tech, 5-8 Deziray Turner of Austin Bowie and 6-0 Madison Ralston ofArgyle.
In the recent past, the Jack Frost has showcased the talents of two-time UConn All-American Moriah Jefferson (THESA), Stanford’s Amber Orrange (Houston Westbury), Baylor ‘s Odyssey Sims (Irving MacArthur) and Duke and Baylor’s Alexis Jones (Irving MacArthur).
Top-rated individuals in the boys field will include McNeil’s 6-3 Victor Bailey, Cedar Ridge’s 6-7 Tim Holland, Churchill’s 6-3 Jeff Fesperman, Byron Nelson’s 6-6 David Nzekwesi and Lake Travis’s 6-7 Luke Hamilton.
The tournament sites are Eagle Gym and the GHS Auxillary Gym on the main Georgetown High School campus and Southwestern University’s Robertson Center.
Pool play is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, beginning at 9 a.m. with the girls playing two rounds on Thursday and one on Friday with the boys playing one round on Thursday and two on Friday. Bracket play will be staged on Saturday with the girls Gold final at 5 p.m. and the boys Gold final at 6:30 p.m.
The tournament is named in honor of former Georgetown Independent School District Supt. Jack Frost, who will be on hand for the event.
