On Thursday February 11, the first track meet of the season took place. The meet was a dual meet, with the only other team being Byron Nelson. The meet is mainly just a practice meet.

“The track meet went by really fast since there was only two teams,” Sophomore Kaley Allen said. “I wasn’t able to get that long of a break in between my races.”

Runners are allowed to be in as many races as they want to be, unlike in other meets. The dual meet is for coaches to tell what race each runner will be best at. This meet determines what event runners will participate in for the rest of the year.

“This is my first year running track,” Allen said. “It’s interesting to see what I’m going to run. This meet I ran the 800 and the mile.”

Coming from middle school track, it may be scary competing against older girls as a freshman.

“Being a freshman, it was a little scary, especially having to compete against the older girls for the first time,” freshman Ashley Stewart said. “Overall, the track meet was fun though and I think I did really well.”

For some runners, it was fun competing in meets for the first time in a while because they were out for injuries.

“Towards the end of last season I wasn’t able to run or pole vault because of a back injury I had,” senior Laura Lotze said. “I was basically a track manager all season. I was happy to be able to run again at this meet, but I can no longer pole vault because of my injury.”

The 4×4 relay is the most intense race to watch and is everyone’s favorite.

“This meet was my first time running the 4×4 for varsity,” sophmore Madison Peltier said. “I’m so excited to finally be on it because I have always loved watching the 4×4 compete. I’m super excited for this season.”

As a senior on the team and captain, it can be exciting to watch the younger kids compete.

“I loved watching the freshman compete,” Lotze said. “It’s fun watching them since I’ve never seen them run before. It makes me excited for what the season has in store for us as a team.”
