Early Sept. marked the beginning of Team Tennis district play, and after a tough loss to Frisco Reedy, the Eagles were ranked second in the district. Next stop was the area tournament, which played out on Monday, Oct. 26.

Throughout the course of the season, the tennis team has played district matches and, after a total of 19 games, finished in the top four schools to qualify for area.

“We got second in district against Krum, which is a really hard team to beat,” senior Aljona Begaj said. “This year we beat them for the first time in forever.”

The Eagles lost by only one point (10-9) to Frisco Reedy, which shows that they held a good ranking as they moved into area.

“They were really close matches,” junior Reeves Mosely said. “Eight of the matches that we played went into a tiebreaker. I guess we just couldn’t finish it out, but we were pretty evenly matched.”

The Eagles defeated Anna 10-0 in the first round, defeated Melissa 10-3 in the second round, and lost to Frisco Reedy 10-7 in the third round of the area matches this past week.

“Now we’ll be going to region,” senior Brandon Couch said, “which is supposed to be on Friday.”

Following the area tournament will be Regionals where the top one or two teams will advance. It will be held on Friday Oct. 30, if weather permits, in Grapevine.

“There are some really competitive teams, but there’s still a good chance we could make it,” Begaj said.
