More Than a Crown, Hoco Court Talks About the Real Meaning of being Nominated

October 23, 2015

This year’s Homecoming King and Queen nominees are Ty Smith, Shane McKinney, Adam Dyer, Zach Schermehorn, Tanner Boyzuick, Pratyush Joshi, Sarah Lewellyn, Claire Despain, Kenzie Cvar, Jessica Fischer, Ari Stryon, and Kennedy Cullum. The Nominee’s were nominated by their peers, yet the final vote for King and Queen has recently been voted upon by the whole school. The big reveal of whom will claim the title of the 2015 Homecoming King and Queen will be announced at tonight’s game during half time.

There are many mixed emotions when it comes to what being nominated really means.

“Being nominated is such an honor because it shows me that people actually know who I am,” Cullum said. “It makes me feel important and noticed.”

The preparation that goes into the week of homecoming is far beyond what one would expect. Guys have to dig up a suit to wear on the field while the girls are on the hunt to find the perfect dress to wear in front of the entire community on Friday night.

“I went dress shopping with my sister who came down from Austin to share this special moment with me,” Styron said.

On the other hand, Boyzuick’s preparation has to do more with the mental process.

“I am preparing by figuring out the best way to deal with having to wear a suit to a football game,” Boyzuick said. “Not used to that.”

To Styron, being nominated had a profound effect on her.

“I feel very appreciative and thankful for the fact that my class thought of me when asked who they wanted as their homecoming queen,” Styron said.

Despain, on the other hand, sheds a light joke as she addresses what being a prospective Queen nominee means to her.

“It means a lot to me to be nominated because I’m excited to represent the school,” Despain said. “Especially the nerds of the school.”

While Lewellyn sends hopefully energy that she will be crowned Queen as a reward to her extensive amounts of activity within the school.

“I want people to vote for me because I’m not the stereotypical girl that usually wins homecoming queen,” Lewellyn said. “I represent many organizations in school and I’m respected by many.”

Boyzuick is kind of in an opposition situation. Personally, he doesn’t mind seeing someone else receive the title of King.

“I want Pratyush to win,” Boyzuick said. “He’s awesome and deserves the recognition.”

Growing up in this community, students have been able to watch older classes walk across the field in anticipation of being crowned as the potential King and Queen of our school.

“I really looked up to those girls, because they are nominated by their class and voted upon by the whole school,” Cvar said. “It’s really neat to see who people look up to, and to be considered a role model is honoring but also makes me feel super special and just thankful.”
