Wrestling is an incredibly arduous sport that requires constant perseverance throughout the competition. Many sacrifices are made in order to compete in this demanding competition, and each wrestler is faced with various challenges throughout the season.

“For me the biggest difficulty has been being on varsity as a sophomore and being constantly faced with older and more experienced wrestlers,” sophomore Jameson Shaw says. “But, our win from the meet last night is evidence that I and the team have been practicing hard and improving a lot.”

Each match lasts for two minutes or less, and if one of the opponents is pinned to the ground the match is won. Perseverance is a necessity when it comes to these one-on-on matches, which doesn’t always come easy for varsity wrestlers.

“It’s a major struggle when it’s near the end of the match, but you know you have to keep fighting so you don’t let yourself or your team down,” explains sophomore Logan Weitzer. “But, when you win a match, you feel so proud of yourself and realize that all the hard work you’ve put in is paying off.”

Though wrestling is mainly an individual sport, the team’s win to loose ratios individually have improved throughout the season, as they will continue to be, assures Junior Captain, Dominic Koziol.

“Everyone on the team has shown great improvement, especially the newcomers,” Koziol says. “Of course there’s always room to get better, and I think that we’ll do that and get some good wins.”

The team’s next wrestling match is this Saturday, Dec. 20, at Timber Creek High School. The time of the match is to be announced.
