Eagles Roll Over Graham, Extend Win Streak to 20

The Argyle Eagles football team improved to 4-0 after a 35-27 victory over the Graham Steers continuing their now 20 game win streak. Argyle faced Graham last year in the semi-finals, so the team knew that this was going to be a tight contest.

The team primarily relied on a pounding running game on the back of their workhorse running back, Nick Ralston, to wear down clock, score points and give the Argyle defense rest.

“I just give all the credit to the line,” RB Nick Ralston said. “They let me make plays, let the receivers make plays. I had huge gaps and the linemen just kept pounding.”

Ralston rushed for four of Argyle’s five touchdowns. The fifth touchdown came from Dane Ledford, the team’s only two-way sophomore starter, on an interception return in the third quarter.

“That touchdown was crazy,” CB Dane Ledford said. “All these thoughts were going through my head. It’s just an awesome experience being able to play out there with my teammates.”

When Graham took possession of the ball, down eight points with under two minutes left, Ledford came through again, drawing praise from several of his teammates.

“He’s a younger guy,” DB Taylor Sweatt said. “But he plays like a senior. He comes out and steps up like everyone else.”

For the second straight week, the Eagles kept it close for the majority of the game before the defense locked down Graham’s offense to give the team a victory.

“What it’s all about is when we come out in the second half, instead of slowing down, we speed it up,” Sweatt said. “We get hyped, we come out fast, and we come out hot and that’s what you have to do to win.”

Argyle has now won a school record 20straight games, and the players feel that it’s a great accomplishment, one that they plan on adding to.

“The coaches get us ready,” Ralston said. “We get a lot of help from the younger players who realize that this is Argyle, we have a winning tradition, and we have to do whatever it takes to win.”

Even though Argyle beat Graham in the state semi-finals last year, a lot of people doubted Argyle would win this week with the departures of WR Ian Sadler and FS Connor Wilson, but the team never had any doubts in their own abilities.

“Everybody coming into this game was doubting us,” Sweat said. “ A lot of people were saying ‘No way Argyle can beat them’, but we just came out here and showed them what winning is all about.”
