For the past two years, the Lady Eagles have held a volleyball tournament in honor of Sawyer Camillo, a former Argyle volleyball player, who passed away shortly after graduating. Many teammates who knew Sawyer see this tournament as a way to remember her and her contribution to the team.

“Even though I didn’t know her,” sophomore, Halee Van Poppel said. “I still want to play my best because I know how much it means to everyone.”

Only one girl left on the team has played with Sawyer.

“It’s really emotional because she was such a big part of my life,”  Sawyer’s former teammate and friend, Katy Keenan, said. “So playing this tournament in honor of her is such a big deal to me.”

During the tournament, drawstring backpacks were sold to raise money for Sawyer Camillo’s memorial fund. The funds raised will go toward the Argyle volleyball program as well as other charities, but ultimately, the tournament is a means to support volleyball and what Sawyer stood for.

“We’re out here to play for her,” Van Poppel said.
