Argyle senior, Kirsten Couch, receives her $1,000 scholarship from the Chamber of Commerce

Among the many highlights at the award ceremony on May 14, senior students Ben Irons and Kirsten Couch were awarded the Argyle Chamber of Commerce Scholarship for $1000. They were selected for their exemplary essays taking a stance for or against passage of the May 2014 AISD bond. The bond was voted on May 10 and included propositions totaling $45 million for facility renovations, new buses, technology updates, construction of new buildings and a new campus for the school district. The bond is contentious for some for the tax increases that would affect some portion of families living in the district.

Couch feels that the bond would be good if it was distributed to programs that are lacking sufficient resources.

“We do need a lot of money for the programs,” Couch said. “Because so much money is put towards football, so a lot of other programs are neglected, like tennis. We can’t actually compete here at district level. We have to go other places to compete because we don’t have six courts. We only have four courts.”

She has her hopes of where the bond money should be implemented.

“It would be nice if they have the equipment they need,” Couch said. “Tennis, new schools, and updates to the science lab I think are the most important things. Things like new bleachers and football, maybe not as much.”

When Couch’s name was announced it came as a total shock.

“My mom had originally told me I was not chosen,” Couch said. “She said, ‘the email went out. You didn’t make it.’ So it was a complete shock to me.”

As she made her off the stage, Couch was again praised for her writing by the Chamber member, who predicted a bright future for Couch as a writer.

Ben Irons, who also received the award, had a strong position about the bonds.

“I just didn’t see where it would take away from anyone else and felt that it could be only bring benefits,” Irons said.

Though he knew the new bonds would not affect him because he will be graduating before they are implemented, he still hoped for their implementation.

“Being a member of the soccer team where we didn’t get as much as other sports teams encouraged the essay,” Irons said. “Also my brother, who is part of the tennis team, could really use improved facilities. They don’t even have locker rooms.”

And like Couch, Irons did not anticipate winning the scholarship.

“I didn’t really know about the scholarship until the Friday before,” said Irons. “I didn’t expect to win it but I thought it would be really cool to get a scholarship so I’m pleased.”
