Revolution Wages on in Ukraine

Crimea, Russia
Crimea, Russia

The revolution in Ukraine continues to escalate as more and more countries have involved themselves. The revolution sparked in the city Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, when protesters rioted against the now ex-President, Viktor Yanukovych, as he fled the capital on Feb. 21, killing 80 protesters along the way. Yanukovych is now wanted in Ukraine for his acts of crime against the country. As a result of Yanukovych’s actions, the old Ukrainian government was dissolved and a new one was put into place several days later.

Many Countries have begun to involve themselves in Ukraine’s revolution, including the United States. However, the country that is taking the biggest interest in the revolution is Russia. The country that used to be one of Ukraine’s biggest allies and even a financial supporter has turned against Ukraine. Russia “sieged” the Republic of Crimea after Crimea voted to secede from Ukraine earlier this month and become a part of Russia. President Vladimir Putin has also issued troops to guard the border between Ukraine and Russia. These events have caused a lot of controversy, especially with the European Union who is threatening to postpone or even cancel the G8 Summit in Sochi this summer.

So what does all this mean for the United States? And, how does it relate to us at home?

“I hope that Ukraine will be able to have their own government,” Senior Monica Canizares said. “I’m glad that they got rid of their president because that is what the people want.”

Canizares is not the only student at Argyle with similar opinions.

“It’s good that Ukraine is fighting for their independence,” senior Kim Strelke said. “But, I hope they aren’t stifled along the way to their independence.”

Though it is still unknown what the outcome of this revolution will be, many students have their own ideas about it.

“Though things might get messy with Russia getting involved,” Strelke said, “I hope everything will smooth over and calm down.”
