Get Some Mad Real-World Skills

Get+Some+Mad+Real-World+Skills

Haven’t you sometimes been in a class and asked yourself “How will I use this later in my life?” Many of us have at one point or another.

If you are interested in a class that will keep you connected, think about journalism. In a recent article, “Student journalist, connected: How high school journalism gives students the 21st-century skills they need (and we’re not just talking social media),” written by Alexandria Johnson, she states that “Today’s student journalists are connected to the real world. Their work isn’t just a grade. Accountability and responsibility are musts as they manage hard deadlines and practice one of the most difficult skills required in workplaces – teamwork.”

The article goes on to describe other important skills such as using project-based learning, writing and designing for an audience, experimenting with new technologies, and using social media for communication as part of the class. It’s all true even though it is said in such a formal way.

Seriously though, working on The Talon News is fun and rewarding. You get to be involved in all the activities, take photos, write articles, interview students, and put it all together in the paper. If you want to be connected, have a conversation with Mrs. Stacy Short.
