Sneaky Snake Slides Through the Halls on All Hallows Eve

A rat snake was found sliding through the middle school halls on Oct. 31 and was “shuffle-boarded” out of the school with a broom by science teacher, Barbara Hayden and a custodian.

The farm fears have come true. Terrifying things have been slithering through the hallways, especially through the Band Hall and Percussion hall. Most people would have had a panic attack when spotting a sneaking snake, but luckily for Argyle, Mrs. Barbra Hayden, the 8th grade science teacher, was the one who ran into the snake.

“I thought it was a left over snake from the pep rally,” Mrs. Hayden said. “I walked right by it the first time and was going to pick it up, but I had too many things in my hands. So I went back to my room, dropped my stuff off, and walked by it again when it moved!”

Yet Mrs. Hayden wasn’t scared. Instead she tackled the situation perfectly with the help of a trusty custodian and a long broom stick.

“I asked him to find a long stick, like a pole or a broom, to push it out,” Hayden said. “I basically shuffle-boarded it down the hall and out of the doors; however, it started getting mad and striking out,” she said.

Luckily the aggressive  rat snake was successfully shuffled out of the school. It was then discovered that this isn’t the first incident in which a snake has entered the school.

“I have seen a couple of snakes in here over the last few years,” Hayden said.

In the past, the snakes have come in during winter.

“Its when it starts getting cold and they are looking for heat,” she said.

People are starting to get curious as to whether more precautions should be taken against snakes entering the building. There are a few ways to make this possible. One way is by adding moth balls around the entrances of the school. In theory, this keeps snakes away by its smell. Another possible solutions is by adding replant around the school, which is an affective chemical.

“I am sure there is something already being done on a regular basis,” Hayden said. “In the end, things happen. We do live in the country. Its kind of similar to having a mouse or bees in the school.”

However, now Mrs. Hayden has a very exciting story to tell her students. Not many teachers can claim they have shuffle-boarded a striking snake before. Especially a “fake” one on the creepy crawly night of Halloween.
