Eagles Set Volleyball Court Aflame, Burn Decatur

Eagles+Set+Volleyball+Court+Aflame%2C+Burn+Decatur

By the alternating bouts of shouts, jeers, and wild applause bursting from the gymnasium Tuesday afternoon, it sounded as if the whole school had gathered to root for the Lady Eagles in their fight against Decatur. What an exciting game!

Brooke Robertson began the game explosively, delivering dig after dig within the very first moments of game play, somehow knowing exactly where to place the ball. Setter, Alexa Bass, made numerous close saves, smart serves and proved to be an invaluable support for the team. Argyle won the first round 25 to 16, and at first, it seemed this was just another game the girls could breeze through.

Not so, however. From the beginning, the second round began slowly. Lindsey Eckert threw a couple nasty back-row attacks at Decatur, but Argyle steadily fell behind. Just when the girls had lost 6 points, Robertson launched a wicked attack at the opposition and inspired a new momentum. Katy Keenan, middle-blocker, and Eighmy Dobbins, outside hitter, attacked ferociously and fought Decatur for every point, tying at 19, and then 20, and then at 22. Yet when it looked as if the girls had it for certain, Decatur scored two quick points and won the second round.

Conversely, the girls steamed ahead in the 3rd round and gained a luxurious lead of 23–17 before their opponents found some sudden momentum and came within a point of tying at 24. Fortunately, the Lady Eagles held on to their lead and took the 3rd round for their own.

Alyssa Bruton ignited the spark for the Lady Eagles’ final round of the night with a couple resounding serves. Katy Keenan, Brooke Robertson, and Laine Lowry dominated, with kill after kill. The Lady Eagles had pulled ahead by 9 points, before the opponents seemed to prepare for their last fight. The whole team collaborated superbly for their seventeenth point, a particularly contentious one that kept the crowds on the edge of their seats for what felt like hours. Eckert, Bass, Keenan, Sizelove, and Lowry all pulled spectacular maneuvers. Finally, Robertson launched the last attack of the game, giving Argyle a hard-fought 3-1 victory over 3rd state-ranked team, Decatur.
