College Admissions

If someone has ever told you that senior year is the easiest and most fun of year of high school, change your mindset now. Unless you have your college applications already pre-planned and you know that you are for sure getting into the college of your dreams, which no one really does, then prepare yourselves for a major reality check.

College admissions have gotten more and more demanding each successive year, and with some schools’ acceptance rates down below ten percent, there is no better time to start your preparations than right now. Once senior year starts, you won’t have an abundance of time to work on applications or scholarship essays, nor will you want to. Here are some precautionary steps to prepare you for the infamous and daunting college admissions process.

First, talk to your counselors, teachers, parents, and past students that have already been through the process. The counselors are your best friends through this stressful time because they know what they are doing and they know how to explain everything to you. After all, this is their job! But they aren’t going to read your mind and come to you to help you solve your problem. Teachers know the process just as well and will provide you with great insight on when and how to do whatever it is that you should be doing. They also are great sources for letters of recommendation, so establish a relationship before it’s too late. Some parents help with the process more than others do, but it is important to converse with them about what your options are and create some sort of outline for your future, at least up until the end of senior year. Finally, talk with past students. The torturous process is still fresh in their memory (no matter how much they may want to forget it) and they will be able to give you some of the best advice on what to do and not to do.

Most importantly, converse with the colleges that you are interested in. E-mail admissions representatives for information about deadlines, the school’s specific requirements, scholarships, athletics, and anything else that may come to mind. They are your best source of information because they are representing that school and they want you to go there.
